Driving from Burgas to Sunny Beach and Nessebar
The 35 km north from the airport, what the strip does to your drive time, and where to leave the car in Nessebar.
The short version
One road north, and it is busier than the distance suggests
Sunny Beach sits about 35 km north of Burgas Airport, and the drive is straightforward: out of the airport, north along the coast, past Pomorie, and into the resort. In ordinary traffic it takes a little over half an hour.
The distance is not the interesting part. What matters is that the resort is served by a single strip road, and in July and August that road absorbs the entire evening movement of a very large number of people. The same 35 km can take an hour if you arrive at the wrong time.
That is worth knowing before you pick a car rather than after. If your trip is mostly this stretch in high season, the gearbox is the decision that will affect your mood most, and on this coast the automatic barely costs more.

The strip has three completely different personalities
Morning
The strip is empty and the beach is at its best. This is the window for driving anywhere, because the road is clear.
Afternoon
Everything slows. If you are moving between resorts, this is the hour to be somewhere rather than travelling.
Evening
The strip becomes a single slow queue. Twenty minutes of stop start traffic is normal, which is the honest argument for an automatic in August.

Parking is the real constraint, not the driving

What people ask about this stretch
Not to stay there. The resort is self contained and everything is walkable or a short taxi. The car is for leaving: Nessebar, Sveti Vlas, the villages inland, and the quieter beaches south of Burgas that the resort transfer never goes to.
About 35 km and roughly 35 minutes in ordinary conditions. In peak August evenings the last few kilometres along the strip take longer than the rest of the journey put together.
For the timing, yes. The old town is at its best early or late, and the bus schedule does not serve either well. Just park before the causeway rather than trying to reach the middle of the peninsula.
Most hotels on the strip have parking, but it is not universal and it is not always free. It is a one line question to the hotel, and worth asking before you book the car rather than after.
