Where people actually drive

Burgas Airport is the door to the whole bay

Almost nobody flies here to stay in Burgas. The airport serves a string of resorts north and south of the city, and the drive times below are the ordinary ones, not the best case at four in the morning.

Destination Distance Drive What the car is for
Sunny Beach about 35 km north about 35 min The big resort strip. One road in along the coast, and the car matters most for getting out of it.
Nessebar about 35 km north about 35 min The old town sits on a small peninsula. Park outside the neck and walk in, the lanes are cobbled and narrow.
Pomorie about 20 km north about 20 min Salt lakes, a quieter beach and the shortest hop from the airport of anywhere on this list.
Sozopol about 35 km south about 40 min South of the bay and slower to reach than the distance suggests, because the road bends inland.
Primorsko about 55 km south about 60 min Far enough south that a car stops being convenient and starts being the only sensible option.

We flew in late and the desk was still open, which is the whole reason I book a small local supplier now. The car was a plain Skoda and it took us to Sozopol and back for a week without a single complaint.

Prices really are as flat as the list makes them look. I compared three suppliers and the difference across the week was about the price of one dinner, so I stopped optimising and just booked.
Hanne Lindqvist Gothenburg
Drove down from Romania a few times before and finally tried flying and hiring instead. Cheaper, and no border queue. Picked an automatic because of the traffic around Sunny Beach in August.

The questions that actually get asked

For the city itself, no. Burgas is compact and walkable and the beach is at the end of the main street. The car earns its keep the moment you want Sozopol, the salt lakes at Pomorie, or a village lunch inland, because the bus timetable thins out fast once you leave the coast road.

In the current live window the cheapest cars start around EUR 16 a day and the largest in the same window sit around EUR 36. That is a narrow spread by European standards, and it is the honest reason this coast is a good place to hire: there is no expensive tail to avoid.

Both, and the split is close to even. Of the hundred cars in the live window, 55 are automatic. That is unusually good for the region, so if you only drive an automatic you are not paying a scarcity premium here.

No. The main coastal route is a normal two lane road, well surfaced and busy rather than difficult. The genuinely awkward driving is inside the old towns, where the lanes were laid out for carts and parking is the real problem, not the driving.

Bulgaria charges an electronic vignette for national roads. Ask the supplier whether the car already has a valid one before you drive off; most rental fleets keep them current, but it is a one line question that avoids a fine.
