Just over half the live Burgas fleet is automatic, so the gearbox costs you far less here than it does further south.
Side by side
General advice about gearboxes is written for markets where automatics are rare. Burgas is not one of them, which changes the answer.
| Automatic | Manual | |
|---|---|---|
| Share of the live window | 55 of 100 cars | 45 of 100 cars |
| Typical daily rate here | Inside the same EUR 16 to 36 range | Inside the same EUR 16 to 36 range |
| Availability in August | Books out first, so reserve earlier | Usually still available late |
| Best argument for it | Coast traffic and unfamiliar roads | The cheapest cars in the window are usually manual |
Where it earns the money
The strip crawls in high season. Stop start traffic for twenty minutes is where the left leg starts complaining.
A narrow approach, a queue for parking and a lot of hesitation from drivers ahead of you.
Unfamiliar junctions after a late landing, when one less thing to think about is worth paying for.
Away from the coast the roads climb and twist. An automatic will not make you faster, but it makes the descent calmer.
Gearbox questions
Not on this coast. Of the hundred cars in the live Burgas window, 55 have an automatic gearbox. That is a healthier split than many Mediterranean destinations, where the automatic is a specialist item priced accordingly.
Barely, and that is the useful part. Because automatics are common here they sit inside the same EUR 16 to 36 band as everything else rather than above it. The premium you would pay elsewhere is largely a scarcity premium, and there is little scarcity here.
In July and August, yes. Common is not the same as unlimited, and the automatics are the first things to go when several charters land in the same week. Outside the peak you can leave it later without much risk.
One honest one: the traffic on the resort strip in high season. If your trip is mostly the coast road between Burgas and Sunny Beach in August, the gearbox is the difference between a relaxed drive and an irritating one. Outside those weeks the manual is fine.
The list above is filtered to two pedal cars only. Put your real landing and return times in and it will show which of them the Burgas desks still have free.
