Five drives

Everything here is under ninety minutes

Burgas sits in the middle of its bay, which means the interesting places are split north and south of you rather than all in one direction. Times below assume ordinary traffic, not August evenings on the strip.

Destination Distance Drive Length What it is
Pomorie about 20 km north about 20 min Half day A salt lake, a long thin peninsula and a town that stays quiet even in August. The shortest drive on this page.
Sozopol about 35 km south about 40 min Half day The old town is wooden, walkable and much smaller than Nessebar. Park before the neck and walk in.
Ropotamo about 50 km south about 50 min Half day A river running through a reserve south of Sozopol. The boat trip is the point and the car is the only sensible way to reach it.
Primorsko about 55 km south about 60 min Full day Far enough that the coast empties out. Long beaches, and the drive itself becomes part of the day.
Strandzha edge about 70 km south west about 80 min Full day Inland hills and villages behind the coast. Ordinary roads, no crowds, and nothing resembling a resort.

Practical

Four things worth knowing before you set off

The coast road is the spine

Almost everything on this page hangs off one north to south route. It is a normal two lane road, well surfaced and busy rather than difficult.

Bulgaria uses an electronic vignette

National roads require one. Ask the supplier whether the car already has a valid vignette before you drive off, because the answer is usually yes and the fine for assuming is unnecessary.

Fill up before the small places

Stations are common along the coast and sparse once you turn inland towards Strandzha. Top up in Burgas or Sozopol rather than hoping.

Distances mislead here

The road bends inland around the bay, so a 35 km trip south takes 40 minutes rather than 25. Plan on the times rather than the kilometres.

Day trip questions

What people ask before driving out

Sozopol, and it is not close. It is under an hour, the old town is genuinely old rather than reconstructed, and it is small enough to see properly in an afternoon. Nessebar is more famous and correspondingly busier.

No. The coastal route is ordinary two lane driving and the inland roads behind it are quiet. The awkward part of any of these trips is parking in a historic centre, not the driving between them.

Some, badly. Buses run along the coast but the timetable decides your day, and the reserve at Ropotamo and the Strandzha villages are effectively unreachable. The car exists to make the schedule yours.

Primorsko is the practical limit for a comfortable day out and back. Beyond it the coast keeps going towards the Turkish border, but the drive stops being a day trip and starts being a relocation.
